If you don’t support the education of our children – the future generation – then you do not support a stable and growing society.
I recently had the opportunity to hear Cindy Stevenson, the Superintendent of my school district, speak about upcoming ballot initiatives that would provide more funding to our school district (which is currently facing another $45 million in budget cuts). I was very moved by her words. In addition to her strong passion for a quality education, it really made me think about how lucky some of us are to have the opportunities that we do, and how much it sucks that some people are unwilling to pay slightly higher taxes to support it. It’s a very real possibility that every school in the district will be losing a few staff members, and important programs as well.
At Lakewood, we’re lucky to have a very fancy video production studio, which has been a great opportunity to explore my interests. However, extra and “unnecessary” things such as that are likely to be cut, which is a real bummer. And I think of other schools, where kids will no longer be getting the full education that they deserve, just because someone didn’t want to pay ~$34 more per year.
This is what it comes down to: if you’re not willing to support the future generation, then you’re just shooting yourself in the foot.
